History of Vape Mods

The name vape mod can be traced to earliest days of vaping. Mod being short for modification, it originally described devices far removed from the technological tour de force which is the modern vape mod.

Vape mods vary greatly in size. The fundamental trait they share is 510 threading for the tank and the ability to kick out enough wattage for serious sub-ohm vaping. They are perfect for high-VG e-liquids with lower nicotine strengths and freebase nicotine.

Vape pods, no matter how large and powerful they become, do not have cross compatibility with other brands. They often do not have compatibility with similar devices from the same manufacturer and earlier models in the same product line.

Vape Mod Improvements

If you browse the current inventory of modern vape mods, you may think that not much has changed. A Smok TFV4 Tank from 2015 looks an awful lot like a Smok TFV19 tank if you squint your eyes. There are innovations like bubble glass but the fundamental functionality isn’t visible and the shape in basically the same. Underneath the skin, there have been huge improvements.

The basic vape mod is a square box with a screen, lock-fire button, and a pair of wattage controls to navigate the menu. As mentioned above, the 510 connection is a unifying thread in vape mods.

Sizes will vary. Most new vape mods come with an optimized tank. If you have an old tank you love, make sure there is no overhang. Outputs have also been consistent for several years, peaking at around 220 watts.

The second option is high-VG vape juice with a 70/30 VG/PG ratio and lower strength freebase nicotine. This is mod fuel and perfect for a high-tech vape mod. Despite wattage outputs in the 200 range, even the heaviest hitting coils rarely handle much more than 100 watts.

Synthetic nicotine marks another change. It has a clearer flavor than tobacco-derived nicotine. It will allow the vape industry to finally cut all ties with tobacco. High-PG, high nicotine freebase juices were once popular. These were vaped out of vape pens and filled a similar role to nic salts. But they used freebase nicotine, which has a higher pH making it harsher at higher nicotine strengths. This limited how strong a high-PG juice could be and the level of satisfaction enjoyed by the adult vapers who used these devices.

Simplification is the innovation that the Smok Morph 2 brings to the table. The TFV18 tank has replaced the old Smok TF tank.

With a firing speed of 0.001s, it is one of the fastest drawing mods around. The Smok Morph 2 uses the IQ-S smart chip and has a complete list of standard safety features.

Smok Morph 2 Features

The Smok TFV18 has an e-liquid capacity of 7.5ml but does not appear bulky. The coils are press fit. The TFV18 Meshed 0.33 ohm Coil is pre-installed and operates best at an imposing 100 to 110-watts.

The Smok Morph 2 also comes with a 0.15 ohm Dual Meshed Coil. It works best in the same power band. The biggest change is a newfound focus on leak reduction at Smoktech.

Vape Starter Kits

It is still an option to purchase a vape mod with no vape tank but purchasing a starter kit is a better value. The innovative designs reviewed above are all starter kits that include a tank.

What you won’t find in your starter kit are 18650 batteries. These are sold separately rather than pre-installed. Otherwise, a vape mod starter kit contains everything you need to start vaping.

If you are looking for a vape mod with an integrated battery, there are plenty of great options as well.

Some of the innovative vape mods of 2022 have the potential vape nic salts. Many are not suitable at all. In every case, you need a low wattage setting and a high-resistance coil. Nic salts are too potent to be vaped in the same manner as max-VG juices

If you have no interest in high-VG juices, a vape pod starter kit is the logical choice. But if you can find a mod with a coil that has a resistance of around 1.0ohms and works at 20-30 watts, you are in business. The Gen Nano is a great example, although it does not have the cigalike form factor that many vape pod users prefer.

For vape mods that use 18650 batteries, they can technically be recharged in the device, but a standalone charger is recommended. Not only can it prolong battery longevity, but you can always batteries on standby as well.

Types of Vape Mods

Vape mods come in all shapes and sizes. There are tube mods which have few features but a fire button, battery, and sub-ohm tank. The Vaporesso Sky Solo is a great example of this style. There are mini mods which have the same form factor as a larger vape pod but at 2/3rds scale. Then there is the whole confusing business of vape pods, mod pods, and pod mods.

Vape Pod versus Vape Mod

Let us double back to the increasingly blurred lines that separate vape mod from vape pod. Not long ago this was an easy question to answer. Vape pods were cheap little Juul alternatives with high-resistance coils that vaped nic salts. Vape mods were big beefy devices with 230 watts of power.

The technology of gas station vape pods has not improved, although they now offer fewer popular flavors, but refillable vape pods have improved dramatically.

A powerful vape pod kit can handle high-PG and max-VG juices. The Smok RPM40 was one of the first to be able to do this competently and with adjustable wattage. In 2022, even small refillable vape pod kits like the Vaporesso XROS or Smok Novo will have a low-resistance pod that can handle higher-VG juices.

Pod Mod versus Vape Mod

It is not hard to find vape pod designs that have outputs over 40 watts. Some have even more power than that on tap. These are pod mods. Voopoo has an arsenal of these, starting with the Vinci.  

The most powerful vape pod mods still has less power and performance than a full-sized vape mod. With mesh coils, it may not matter to you, but this is an undeniable fact. Just as clear is the fact that few coils require 100 watts, and many operate at 60 watts or less.  

To make matters more confusing, vape pods are generally moving away from the fixed coil set in a pod. The old design style was wasteful. The plastic pod is basically unscathed, even if the coil is shot. With swappable coils, a refillable pod can last for months or longer. You just need to swap out the coil when it starts to fade.

The newest Smok Novo 4, the lineal descendant of one of the original refillable vape pods, now has swappable coils. Vape pods with swappable coils are sometimes referred to as AIO or all-in-one vape pods.

510 Threading

With technological overlap, it at comes down to 510 threading. Vape mods use standardized 510 threading for the vape tank. 

The only exception are tube mods, the Sky Solo reviewed above has a tank which is integrated. The coil and glass can be detached but what would be the base of the vape tank is anchored.

510 threading is a huge feature if you already have a favorite tank. Vape tanks are also wide enough to allow larger coils than fit in a vape pod. This means better flavor, vapor, and performance.
